NewtWap is a WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) client for the Newton Messagepad. It has been tested on the MP 2100 and 130. To install and use NewtWap, do the following: 1. Install the packages onto your Newton: BIT.pkg NewtWap.pkg Runtime.pkg 3. Restart your Newton. 4. Run NewtWap. 5. Enter a WAP site address, or pick one of the sites on the URL list. 6. Press the GO button. The NIE connection slip will appear. 7. You may want to select the Edit... option from the Use: picklist to change the disconnect timeout to 1 minute. If you don't, NewtWap will drop the connection after each page. 8. After you press Connect, NewtWap will connect to the Internet and load the requested site. PLEASE BE PATIENT. There will be an interval between when the NIE connect slip goes away and the Newton busy icon appears. 9. To open a link, click anywhere in the [link] indicator, and then press Open Link. 10. After a few seconds, the requested page should be displayed. 11. You can use the BACK button ( < ) to go back to the previous page. 12. Exit NewtWap. The connection will automatically be dropped after the interval you selected. Sometimes NewtWAP will show the code for a page instead of the rendered page. It shows the code while the page is loading. If the page loads successfully, it will show the rendered page. If there is a problem, it will leave the code on the page to make it easier to diagnose the problem. Usually, a page will not render for one of the following two reasons: 1. The page has been moved, and the server sent back a 302 redirect. In that case, copy the redirected address to the URL box and try again. 2. The page might be a HTML page rather than a WML page. This is easy to tell by looking at the code and seeing if it contains the words HTML or WML. I have included the following source files with this release. These are being released under the GNU public license. NewtWap.txt Revision History: 8/17/00 Version 0.6 Initial Release 08/31/00 Version 0.7 Show busy box (sometimes). Fix page title display.
